New images have just been released of the new Terminal 2 at Heathrow. The £1billion project will eventually house the Star Alliance group of carriers.

The initial phase of the project should be complete by 2013 and the second stage by 2019. The second stage will see the new Terminal extending into the existing T1 by 2019. T1 is to remain operable until stage 2 is complete.

As the home of the Star Alliance carriers, it is estimated that 20 million passengers will use the facility each year. The 11,300 sqm building will house a split level departure lounge with self service check-ins, fast bag drops, traditional check-in desks and 15 security search lanes. The building will also have nine new aircraft stands, three of which can take the new A380 super jumbo.

BAA will also ensure the new T2 is more environmentally efficient. The new building will produce 40% less carbon than the old building with the aid of solar panels and renewable energy.
