Yesterday the first ever exclusive pet air carrier was launched in the US. Pets are allowed on normal passenger aircraft but they are usually put in the hold. The owners of Pet Airways saw a gap in the market for pampered pooches and moggies who’s owners would rather see their pets fly in the cabin. Whereas the hold is dark and the temperature is unregulated the cabin provides a more pleasant environment and cabin staff can check up on their pampered cargo.

Despite the success of the launch there are questions over the the viability of an airline with such a specific niche. In the long term flying only pets might not make financial sense unless people are trying to go for a first-class service or possibly include the owners on the flights. There is also likely to be only seasonal demand when people like to travel on holiday. The service’s popularity could spike in peak summer or winter months when airlines in some areas don’t allow pets to travel.
