Air charter flights to Berlin

If you are flying to Berlin using our private air charter here are a list of the top four tourist locations.

1. TIERGARTEN

The Tiergarten is a large 630 acre park in the centre of the city, often refered to as the green lung. This is an excellent place to chill out or begin your site seeing tour. The park is split by the road “Strasse des 17 Juni”. If you walk north from the golden Victory Column you pass along winding routes that have sculptures and monuments along its path. Walking along the banks of the River Spree to the north of the park you will come across some of the modern glass monolith government buildings. For example, you can see the Bundeskanzleramt (chancellery) and the Paul-Lobe-Haus (parliamentary office).

Whilst in Germany don’t miss the opportunity to eat a bratwurst sausage sandwich. You can get these from vendors along the route. If you go to the park in summer beware of the the old East German habit of totally stripping off on a hot summers day along the river.

2. GALERIES LAFAYETTE

You can get to the Galeries Layfayette by continuing north form the Tiergarten towards Friedrichstrasse. On the way you will come across a line that marks where the Berlin Wall once stood.

Eventually you will come across the art deco building at 76-78 that houses the Galeries Lafayette. Here you can find everything French from perfume, designer wear, to foie gras, cheese and wine. Inside you will see the opulent futuristic décor which was designed Jean Nouvel.

3. GENDARMENMARKT

The Gendarmenmarkt is a beautiful square which dates back to the 18th century and got it’s name from the mounted cavalry regiment, gens d’armes, that were based here until 1773.

In the centre of the square is a neo classical building called the Konzerthaus Berlin. The building was destroyed in the second world war and then restored in 1984. Today the four great halls house all kinds of events. To the left of the Konzerthaus Berlin is the Franzosischer Dom. This terracotta roofed building is a Protestant church but houses exhibitions about the history of French Protestantism and the Huguenots in Berlin.

Another building in the square, is the Deutscher Dom. This cathedral and museum was also damaged in the war and then later restored in 1996.

4. ANHALTER BAHNHOF

If you go to West Berlin you will find the ruins of the Anhalter Bahnhof. This old train terminal, constructed in 1841, was once one of Europe’s finest termini. By the 1930’s about 45,000 passengers departed from the terminal to far flung destinations such as Greece, Italy and France.

Opposite the station is an outdoor exhibition known as Topography of Terror. This exhibition is dedicated to the Nazi Party and its crimes and is located at the train station because of its role in the extermination of the Jews in the Second World War. During this time thousands of people were exported to concentration camp in the Czech Republic. In 1945 the station was finally levelled in an air raid.
